I’ve always enjoyed a healthy and active lifestyle, finding myself needing a hip replacement in my early 70s was something I had not anticipated. My number one priority was to understand what was involved and to find a Surgeon whose expertise would give me the best possible chance of a achieving a great outcome. My initial consultation with Mr Chau was friendly and very informative. Having had an X-ray beforehand he explained why I was experiencing pain and what he would do to resolve this. He said that I would have a CT scan and this would be used to create a 3D model of my anatomy. This will enable them to make a bespoke replacement joint which would be ideal to replace my arthritic one. He explained what the potential risks were as well as the benefits, his professional approach instilled confidence in my belief that he was the Surgeon to carry out the operation. Mr Chou is part of a well organised team at the Spire Lea hospital, from the anaesthetist to the nursing staff, caterers and physiotherapists. They all provide a level of care and assistance which exceeded my expectations. I am extremely pleased that I met Mr Chou and remain confident that I will make a good recovery and continue to enjoy an active lifestyle.

Mr Chou instantly put me at ease by listening to my concerns and explained in detail what the procedure involved and the potential risks . He did this in a most calm reassuring manner. I feel it is very important to have total trust with your consultant and I certainly had that with Mr Chou. He visited me daily before after the operation and always showed great compassion. He is an excellent communicator and always gave me the necessary time to answer any questions. The operation was 100% successful and I therefore value his skill as a surgeon. The practice nurse removing the butterfly stitches commented how neat the wound was. Having dissolving stitches was also a great benefit too. I am most grateful to have been able to be treated by Mr Chou as I felt valued as a patient but more importantly as a human being needing reassurance and clear explanations, without any any medical jargon. He showed me my post operation X-ray and talked me through the image, explaining what the different parts were. I am deeply greatly to Mr Chou for both his medical expertise and patient led practice.

This was my second time around with a hip replacement, so have been through the system already with other consultants. Mr Chou was very good at explaining the procedure, the possible complications, and all the risk factors involved. He was very thorough and made sure that the operation I was having was the correct procedure and that my issue wasn’t being caused by something else. His manner wasn’t rushed and he never hurried me either, answering any questions I had, and making sure I was happy to undertake the operation with informed consent. I would recommend him as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Having had a right hip replacement in 2018 which involved some complications I had been somewhat apprehensive about undergoing surgery on my left hip. Mr. Chou was recommended to me by a former colleague. I eventually made the decision to book an appointment for a consultation with Mr. Chou. Throughout the consultation, I became increasingly convinced and reassured I had chosen a surgeon that understood my concerns and issues from my previous operation. On the day of admission for surgery, both Mr. Chou and the anesthetist visited me, and their professionalism went a long way to easing the understandable apprehension that I felt following my experience 4 years ago. I must assume that the skills of Mr. Chou and his colleagues in performing the operation to such a high standard were directly responsible for me making a quick recovery. In fact, I had recovered to the extent that I was discharged the day after my surgery and ever since then the recovery has far exceeded my expectations and I am weeks ahead of where I was at following my first hip replacement. The care and understanding displayed by all the nursing staff at both the hospital and the physiotherapists have been outstanding. A first class service.

The first time I met Mr Chou I knew that he was very professional and a very caring man who could help with the problem I was experiencing, I felt very ease. I had previously had a hip replacement which was a complete nightmare but I felt very safe with Mr Chou. I have seen Mr Chou in a follow-up consultation 6 week post op and had a couple of issues that I needed answers to. The problems I have are not his expertise and I am going to see my GP to discuss these problems further, Mr Chou is writing to my GP to make them aware of ongoing problems. I do however have another appointment in 6 months to see Mr Chou and hopefully by that time I will be a new woman. I was an NHS patient and this made no difference to being a private patient. All the staff in the hospital were extremely helpful and made my stay very comfortable.
